What solar technology is available?
There are two basic methods of converting solar energy into energy which can be used in the home. Firstly, there are photovoltaic systems. These convert the energy in the sun's rays into electric current. An inverter then converts the low voltage DC current into 230 V AC current. Secondly, there are solar thermal systems. These convert the energy in the sun's radiation into thermal energy. This is used for central heating backup and to heat domestic hot water.
Is your home suitable for a solar thermal system? Criteria at a glance
- The radiation intensity is sufficiently high in all regions of Germany.
- An unshaded roof area, facing somewhere between south east and south west, with an incline of 20° to 60°, is ideal.
- Approx. 1 m² of collector area per person is required for DHW heating. With a larger collector area, the same energy yield can also be achieved on a west or east facing roof.
- Flat roofs are also suitable; wall mounting is possible.

The top of the ErP label displays the name of the manufacturer (I) and the model designation (II) of the product. The rating system for solar cylinders categorises them into seven efficiency classes. A is the highest energy efficiency class here. STIEBEL ELTRON products are almost exclusively in the top group.
